The Carlo V Castle in Monopoli is an ancient XVI century fortress, built under the Spanish domination. It is bound to a famous tale, according to which at night in the Castle the sound of the instrument called tammorra is perceived as it was heard by the terrified fishermen in the proximity. The instrument would be played by the evanescent ghost of a woman who waits since centuries her husband’s return after his shipwreck in a stormy night in the sea of Monopoli.
There are then the peculiar Byzantine rocky Churches, that is churches carved in the rock and entirely covered with frescoes. These structures are a unique and unmissable show, witnessing an ancient ritual and a historical period that has been characterized by the overlapping of East and West, the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Carved in the rock to be outside of the reach of enemies and invaders, the rocky Churches are nowadays a very popular and prestigious tourist destination.
