Touring Club Italiano Orange Flag, the tourist destination was declared Slow Food post for the conservation and protection of the ancient culinary traditions and the local cultivations and productions. In summertime, butcher shops of the historical center have dehors to serve customers cooked meat. It is for sure one of the many experiences you can do in Cisternino.
The Conservatorio botanico i giardini di Pomona is devoted to the Latin goddess. The structure shelters and take care of fruit trees from all over the world. Some of them, risking extinction, were saved and they now lives in a fascinating place.
Among the many attractions of Cisternino, a peculiar attention has to be reserved to the Ciclovia dell’Acqua. It is an itinerary of 500 km, the second cycle lane on aqueduct in Europe. It crosses three southern regions: Campania, Basilicata, Apulia. The cycling path starts from Caposele, in the province of Avellino and arrives in Santa Maria di Leuca. The infrastructure finishes there with a monumental waterfall in 1939.
Villaggio delle Scimmie is a funny experience for children. In the Park, almost 250 baboons in semi-freedom and includes the tropical room, with many species of fishes, reptiles and the entertainment park.
What to see in Cisternino
Among the wonderful things to see in Cisternino, Maac Museum occupies for sure the place of honor. The center of Archaeological Documentation is divided into two floors. One shows prehistoric, Hellenic, Apulian archaeological findings; the second pavilion hosts a Contemporary Art exhibition. The cast of hyenas lair dating back to medium paleolithic and the funerary monument of the Hellenistic period are the most important discoveries.
Another piece of history lights up the tourist’s gaze: Trullo Marziolla in Locorotondo. It is the most ancient in Valle dell’Itria, achieved in 1559 and put at farmers’ disposal for the storage of farming tools and animals’ shelter.
In the city center of Cisternino, along Corso Umberto, there is Palazzo Lagravinese. The residential villa, property of the noble families Lagravinese – Termetrio, dates back to the end of XVIII century. The structure is considered as the most representative of the local community and it has a high level of historical and artistic interest. In the Lamacesare city quarter there is the Santuario della Madonna d’Ibernia. Every year, on Easter Monday, the citizens are in the habit to bring a sweet to the Virgin. From the worship of the goddess Cibele, the veneration of the Virgin Mary is linked to fertility and abundance. In the heart of the city of Cisternino, the majestic Torre civica dell’Orologio stands above the city and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The structure, realized in 1850 by the masters Maestri Curri in Alberobello, is in neoclassical style.
